「陶芸の先生が授業の初日に、教室をふたつのグループに分けると発表しました。そして教室の左側半分の学生は作品の「量」によって、一教室の右側半分の先生には作品の「質」によって、それぞれ成績がつけられることが言い渡されました。」 量グループ：制作した陶器の総重量で成績をつける。数は何点でもOK。重いと高成績。 量グループ、質グループで提出されたすべての作品を、質で並べ直したところ、最高と評価された作品はどれも量グループから出たものだったそうだ。量のグループは山のように作品を制作しつづけたことで、失敗から学んだ。質グループは完璧さにこだわり、理屈をこねたりするばかりであった。
質グループ：制作するのは１点だけ。１点の質で評価される。
